Dr. Gupta Swine Flu:

CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta and His Practical Take on the Swine Flu Scare

by Josh Day

I was pleasantly surprised the other week to read an article on CNN by Dr. Sanjay Gupta where he addressed the media's constant hyping and fear-mongering surrounding H1N1 -- i.e. the dreaded Mexican swine flu.

In fact, reading the article I was so surprised that I was wondering if Dr. Gupta had been called to task by the CNN higher-ups, or chewed out by the CDC and WHO (as there was no mention of their proposed H1N1 vaccine which, out of all population groups, they want to pump into children first), or chastised by CNN's numerous pharmaceutical company sponsors who have already made billions off governments for the proposed multi-dose innoculation.

In his article he visited a local emergency room and spoke to several doctors. The summary of his piece can be illustrated here: "One doctor told me a way to think about things that was helpful. He said 'remove the term H1N1 from the equation. If your child had regular flu, would you take him to the hospital? If the answer is no, then don't take him/her to the hospital now.'" (cnn.com)

Essentially, what he said was a direct contradiction of what the CDC and other federal and world health groups have been screaming, with their computer generated projections of whatever new number of the week of the population who'll die and their constant talk of a swine flu vaccine that will save us all.

Dr. Gupta writes:

So, I decided to get away from the studio, away from the talking heads discussing mortality rates, and away from the hypothetical discussions about what might or might not happen. I wanted to see for myself what was happening in emergency rooms right now. [...] In short, I wanted to create a parents' guide to dealing with the swine flu that is based on the best science and my interviews with experts all over the country. (cnn.com)

What he found in the emergency room was a lot of kids and people terrified of the swine flu and taking up space and and wasting time -- the space and time that should have been dedicated to people with real emergency problems.

The quick primer he presents to parents is practical, rational, and not based on CDC and pharmaceutical industry-driven fear.

Basically, he tells parents to:

  1. Chill the hell out. "As things stand now, the vast majority of children who develop flu-like symptoms this fall will have a few miserable days, and nothing more." He also adds that it's best for kids to stay at home during the flu.
  2. If you're still worried, call a doctor. Do not just go in. Why? Because you may expose your child who probably doesn't have swine flu to others who may. And, he concludes, "after several hours of waiting, you are still likely to be told the basics [of flu treatment]." So save your money, time, and treat the flu with rest, lot of fluids, chicken soup, etc.
  3. Remove the word "swine flu" or H1N1 from your vocabulary. Just forget about it and treat this flu season as you would any other.
  4. The numbers the CDC and WHO throw around are scary, but you need to remember they are projections made by a computer program -- the same as the 36,000, now 40,000 deaths due to seasonal flu, a number that's also far from real or accurate as it takes into account underlying and secondary conditions like pneumonia -- the standard 36,000 or 40,000 number is inflated to pimp the guesswork-generated, entirely-worthless-as-of-last-year seasonal flu vaccine to a frightened and misinformed public. Currently, there is no real reason to suspect that the swine flu is suddenly going to become a widespread killer.
  5. Some times when you should have your kid checked out:
  • A baby younger than 12 weeks has a fever greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit
  • A child, older than 12 weeks has a fever for three days
  • A child's fever returns after a 12-24 hour time period
  • A child is not passing urine or making tears for more than six hours
    • And when to call 911:
  • A child cannot speak while trying to breathe
  • Has a blue or dark purple color to the nail beds, lips or gums
  • Is not responding to you because he is too tired or weak
    (cnn.com)

Once again, Dr. Gupta did not mention the CDC's toxic darling, the upcoming swine flu vaccine, anywhere in his article.

It was a very refreshing read.
