Are
Family Relationships Keeping You Locked in a Box?
by
Leah Day
When
you were growing up, your family had a dynamic, or a relationship forged between
each member based on how you were as children.
Some
people call these relationships your "pecking order." This is the layout
of how all your family members treat one another. Think about your family for
a moment. Chances are the way you feel about your sister and brother have more
to do with who you were as kids than adults.
These
family relationships get ingrained while you're a kid living within your nuclear
family. When you leave home, you're of course free to change, but many people
find that when you return home and get back around your family, those old dynamics
tend to come out of the wood work once again.
When
you leave home, change is inevitable. Within a year or two, you will certainly
not be the same person you were when you left home and absolutely not the same
4 year old who stole candy from the grocery store.
It
seems that the only time your family will really take notice of these changes
is when you really start talking about change and success.
Many
people have awkward feelings about success and riches. In our society, ambitious
people can be seen as greedy, cutthroat, and selfish.
Of
course, this is total nonsense. There is nothing wrong with being successful and
earning more money for yourself and your family.
But
by talking about being successful and starting a new venture, you might actually
be undermining some of your family relationships and dynamics that you've lived
with for years.
Your
sister might have been the smart, A+ student back in grade school, so everyone
probably assumes that she will be the most successful. When you start taking and
acting like you will take this place instead, your family might not know what
to think. How can they rationalize the new, successful person you are with the
person you used to be?
There
is also a prevailing notion started during childhood that two children can't be
interested in the same thing. You may have had exceptional talent with drawing
and painting, but you couldn't actively pursue this talent because your sister
was the drawing / painting child.
The
fact of the matter is, anyone can be successful and talented!
Even if your sister made better grades.
Even
if your brother has a Master's degree.
Even if you're a college dropout.
Even if you're not supposed to be good at that skill / hobby because someone you
were related to was good at it.
The
biggest difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is the lack
of action.
You
may have a family member that could have been a famous musician. She was extremely
talented playing the piano, but she's never taken action to turn that skill into
a successful, money making business.
If
you're willing to take action and work the necessary steps to start a successful
business the you have every right to step into that place and use your talents!
Don't
let your ingrained family dynamics hold you back or keep you locked in the personality
box of your childhood.
Reach
for success, believe in yourself, and become the person you never thought you
could be!
