In
1998, Greg and Judie Westbrook attended Health Minister Training at Hallelujah
Acres and then began in earnest to teach others about the Hallelujah Diet, thinking
it was indeed "God's Ideal Diet" as George Malkmus advocates.
The
Westbrooks noted short-term health improvements in the people they advised, but
people also began to experience hair loss, extreme weight loss, slowing metabolism
and various other problems on the Hallelujah Diet. At the time, Greg and Judie
did not have the insight to realize these problems were diet induced. It would
take three more years for their eyes to be opened.
During the next two years, the Westbrooks developed a weight-loss course called the Weigh of Wisdom Workshop that taught the Hallelujah Diet as a lifestyle. Upon seeing their program, George Malkmus asked the Westbrooks if they would be willing to allow other health ministers to use it, and Greg and Judie agreed.
In November of 2000, they went to North Carolina to train all the health ministers in attendance to become Weigh of Wisdom Workshop Leaders. They continued for a few more trainings the following year, and by the time they finished, the Weigh of Wisdom Workshop was being taught in several states across America.
Of course, the Westbrooks were delighted with the success of the program, but their business relationship lasted only a year at Hallelujah Acres because the Malkmuses chose to introduce a competing weight-loss course of their own and dropped the Westbrook program.
Of
this event, Greg Westbrook says, “This was actually a blessing in disguise because
Weigh of Wisdom students began to contact us directly with their health
concerns instead of contacting Hallelujah Acres.”
As
the Westbrooks began really listening to these people across America, they saw
a distinct pattern emerging that pointed to serious long-term health problems
for some people on the Hallelujah Diet. The Westbrooks couldn't deny the obvious
because privately, each member of their family was suffering severe long-term
deficiency symptoms from the diet.
It took a full year of research and experimentation, but the Westbrooks got well from all their vegan-diet induced symptoms, and so have others they have been working with. Their research uncovered several big surprises about vegan diets and their deficiencies.
Consequently, the Westbrooks no longer teach a diet free of animal products, and are trying to sound a warning to others about the long-term downside to the diet.
